A C-CDA document is of a particular document type. Some document types can be encounter based, in which case you can find the encounter information in the CDA header, componentOf/encompassingEncounter/id
If the information in the header is not present, you can look for one or more Encounter sections (template id 2.16.840.1.113883.10.20.22.2.22, code 46240-8), where the encounter ID is present as the entry id.
Also, note that PID-18 is not a good place for encounter numbers, PV1-19 is the designated spot.

I am not very familiar with the CDA document but understand the basics . We are receiving CCDA's with a title of "Summary of Care". I have read other CDA documents entitled "Continuity of Care". The Continuity of Care one seems to be more encounter-based but again, I am not certain as we do not receive it as of yet. Does anyone know the difference between the 2 and which one is geered more towards providing more of an encounter-based data elements. THank you again....
