Julie Paulson (Jan 17 2020 at 17:23):In the ORU^R01 messages, what is the OBR-26(parent result) and OBR-29(parent number) usually used for?
Craig Newman (Jan 20 2020 at 14:07):Typically they are used to connect a result to a previous result that was the impetus for the new result to be created. For example, a positive bacterial culture result (eg. urine culture that resulted in a bacterial isolate being found) could be the parent to the antibiotic susceptibility testing on that isolate. In this case the susceptibility result message will use OBR-26 and -29 to point back to the "parent" culture result. Reflex tests can also use these fields to link the reflex result to the original parent result.
Craig Newman (Jan 20 2020 at 14:10):HL7's lab reporting (LRI) implementation guide (http://www.hl7.org/implement/standards/product_brief.cfm?product_id=279) has a good description of this in one of the later chapters.
Julie Paulson (Jan 20 2020 at 19:48):VERY helpful document - thank you Craig!
