In the ORU^R01 messages, what is the OBR-26(parent result) and OBR-29(parent number) usually used for?
Typically they are used to connect a result to a previous result that was the impetus for the new result to be created. For example, a positive bacterial culture result (eg. urine culture that resulted in a bacterial isolate being found) could be the parent to the antibiotic susceptibility testing on that isolate. In this case the susceptibility result message will use OBR-26 and -29 to point back to the "parent" culture result. Reflex tests can also use these fields to link the reflex result to the original parent result.
HL7's lab reporting (LRI) implementation guide (http://www.hl7.org/implement/standards/product_brief.cfm?product_id=279) has a good description of this in one of the later chapters.
VERY helpful document - thank you Craig!
